Kite fishing is a technique used to present live bait on top of the waters surface, while keeping all of your main line up and out of the water. This allows us to present the bait away from the boat. Usually, we utilize kite rods, which are short in length, with a manual and/or electrical reel. The kite itself is attached to this rod. There are clips that are either in line or clipped on at 75 foot increments as the kite is let out. The main line from the fishing rod is clipped onto these clips while the kite is being let out. A bait is bridled or hooked in its back in such a way to prevent the bait from dying. These baits are let out simultaneously with the kite. There are usually 2 to 3 baits per kite.
Kite fishing is used to target all different species of fish. The primary targeted species are billfish and dolphin (mahi mahi). The bait usually used are goggle eyes (big eyed scad), blue runners, tinker mackerel, threadfin herring or pilchards. The heartier the bait the better they are.
During the winter months, when the sea conditions are a little too rough to catch bait, it is usually custom to purchase live goggle eyes, which are a nocturnal fish, and care caught by bait fisherman in the late hours of the night.
Kite fishing is a very exciting way to fish. It allows us to see the game fish before it is going to eat. It elicits explosive bites on the surface with occasional sky-rocketing fish!
